Felton is a picturesque village of about 6000 people living downtown and in the surrounding valley and hills. One of the most charming features is the sound of the train whistle from the nearby historic site, Roaring Camp Railroad. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and Fall Creek Park offer miles of scenic hiking, walking, and horse back riding. The San Lorenzo River also runs through town and Henry Cowell Park, along its way to the ocean. While dogs aren't allowed in Fall Creek, they are permitted on most trails in Henry Cowell, as long as they are on a leash. Another smaller park is at Felton Covered Bridge Park, with the historic structure anchoring one end of the park which features play structures and picnic tables.

Felton is at the southernmost end of the San Lorenzo Valley, close to both cities of Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley. There are several big-brand stores: grocery and pharmacies, along with a wide array of restaurants, retail shops and services, largely along Highway 9 which bisects the town.

Because of its more central location and frequently more modern homes, Felton prices tend to be among the more expensive in the San Lorenzo Valley.

However, more affordable housing is available near the Loch Lomond reservoir; this area includes Lompico, Zayante, and Loch Lomond.
